About the Ride:
Get your gravel on this fall. The 2023 R3 Express is moving start locations from previous years to the Sam Houston National Forest. We have two routes, a beginner-friendly 22-mile loop, the ‘lil Sam and the Big Sam is 50 miles. Both routes have less than 4 miles of pavement and wind through beautiful forest service and country roads. The start/finish for the event is at the Shawshank Disc Golf Course – 450 Four Notch Road, near the Four Notch Hunters Camp/Trailhead 8 of the Lone Star Hiking Trail Parking Area. Parking will be at both the Hunters Camp and the Frisbee Golf Course.
The 2023 R3 Express course will be on many of the roads used for the Prison City Gravel Challenge over the last 5 years with some added Forest Service roads closed to vehicles (“B” roads). RIDERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO DISMOUNT AND WALK THEIR BIKE OVER TWO WOODEN BRIDGES ON FS 207.
All riders must have the routes downloaded as the course will not have any signage. New for the 2023 event is age group awards for groups with 5 or more riders!! If you are new to gravel cycling, we look forward to welcoming you into the GRAVEL FAMILY!! If you have been around for a while we are excited to see you again.
